In the mean time, here are some basics you will need to know to understand the blog:
Print coupons
There are several places where you can find coupons. The most common source for print coupons is your local Sunday newspaper. There are several types of coupon inserts that can be found in the newspaper each week. You will find the name of the insert at the top of the packet. Some lucky people will also find inserts in their Monday "junk mail" as well. When I lived in Sacramento in the 95823 zip code I received the RP inserts in the mail. There were also places I knew of that also received the SS insert. I now live in Elk Grove in the 95624 zip code and do not receive either of these.
The following are the acronyms used for these inserts:
P&G - Procter and Gamble (you will usually find these in your newspaper at the beginning of every month)
SS - Smart Source
RP - Red plum
GM - General Mills
When you get these inserts I recommend that you do not cut any coupons out until you are ready to use them. I use a filing system and organize my inserts into manila folders by the date I received them. If you forgot which date you received your insert just look at the small print on the binding of the packet. The date is listed there. This way when you find a good coupon match-up, it is easy to locate the coupons you need. In my postings, I will list the date the coupon was released followed by the acronym for the insert.
- EX: $1.50/1 Febreze Air Effects 5-19-13 RP x6/30 - This coupon is found in the Red Plum insert from 5-19-13
Printable coupons
Coupons can also be printed from the Internet. Most websites will allow you to print 2 coupons per computer. If you have an iphone or ipad and an HP printer you can also print 2 coupons per device from the coupons.com app. Some common websites for finding manufacture printable coupons are:- www.coupons.com
- www.smartsource.com
- Some stores offer their own store specific coupons as well. Target is a store that I frequent which offers their own coupons at:
- coupons.target.com
Target Mobile coupons
Target will from time to time offer mobile coupons. these coupon links will be texted to your smart phone. You will be able to use these coupons once by having the cashier scan the bar code directly from your phone.
Target Cartwheel offers
Target has a new app connected to Facebook. they offer a variety of offers as a certain percentage off items. You can use a cartwheel offer along with a target coupon and manufacture coupon. To start using the cartwheel offers click here to connect with your facebook account. You will need to use your smart phone and have the cashier scan a bar code from your phone once you have added the deals you want to take advantage of.
Ibotta
Ibotta is a fairly new system that will pay you money for certain items purchased. All you have to do is download the free Ibotta app to your smart phone, Sign up for an Ibotta account, scan in your receipts, and scan in the UPC labels from items purchased and you will start earning $$. Once you earn at least $5, Ibotta will transfer your funds into your paypal account.
Coupon Policy
First off - there is one common misconception that I would like to clear up. Many people (including myself before I got into my coupon madness) are under the impression that you can only use one of each type of coupon at a time. This is only half true. Now you must check each store's individual coupon policy for the specifics (see below), but generally you can use one coupon for each item purchased. For example if you buy 2 Crest toothpaste's, you can use 2 of the same toothpaste coupons.
Each store has their own coupon policy. The coupon policy will tell you how many of which kind of coupons they will accept. Many stores which offer their own coupons will allow you to "stack" (use both a manufacture and a store coupon for the same item). Check the coupon policy page for a link to the policies of the stores I frequent. Make sure you are familiar with these policies before you shop and check back on them from time to time. Stores can and will change their policies from time to time.
Coupon components
- expiration dates - Be sure to pay attention to the expiration dates on your coupons! I have gone on many trips that I have planned and organized for only to realize at the register in an embarrassing moment that one of my coupons has expired. In my posts I will list the expiration date with an X.
- EX: $1.50/1 Febreze Air Effects 5-19-13 RP x6/30 - This coupon expires on 6/30
- Value of coupon - another thing that needs to be payed close attention to is the value of the coupon. Many coupons offer $1 off of 2 products. Again, I have planned and organized for several trips when I have overlooked the amount of the product I have to buy only to be embarrassed at the register when the cashier informs me that I don't have enough product to use my coupon. In my posts I will always list the cash value off/amount of product you need to purchase.
- EX: $1.50/1 Febreze Air Effects 5-19-13 RP x6/30 - This coupon is good for $1.50 off of 1 item
